Maintenance & Stormwater Division is seeking a Motor Equipment

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental
Services (DPWES) seeks a Motor Equipment Operator to Operate a
variety of medium and light equipment.

This position reports under the Maintenance and Operations Branch
of Maintenance & Stormwater Division 10635 West Drive Fairfax Va.

Operates a variety of medium and light equipment, including a
tandem-axle dump truck, single axle dump truck, backhoe, road
roller, skid-steer loader, compressed air tools, etc., in all
phases of stormwater infrastructure and road construction
(scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transportation,
excavations, etc.). Conducts daily inspection, routine maintenance,
and light repair on such equipment. Performs a variety of manual
labor task such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting,
asphalt leveling and raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and
other heavy physical work. Ensures that appropriate safety
procedures are followed when operating and working near medium /
small equipment. Duties are performed under supervision.
NOTE: This position is required to be available 24 hours a
day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and
other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired
in the Motor Equipment Operator position after completing six
months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must
possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be
eligible.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent
to completion of the tenth grade; and, two years of experience in
the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a
criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination,
and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without
reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing,
pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out
of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal).
Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing
confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical
descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of
all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat,
eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants,
sleeved shirt, personal fall arrest harness. Replacement of manhole
covers weighing up to 90 pounds. All duties performed with or
without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are
general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus
for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed
payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have
CDL at time of hire.
