A Day in the Life: Safety Manager
We are looking for a Safety Manager for the Mid-Atlantic Division.
This person would support multiple states which includes MD, DC, VA
and DE. This is a field position with up to 80% travel.
Assists in the collection and analytics of data as directed by the
Safety Manager Lead. Works closely with field operations teams to
coach, manage, and audit store safety.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Oversee all safety efforts within assigned area.
- Monitor unscheduled Safety Survey and Policy Review (SSPR) of
all division stores with particular emphasis on Focus stores.
Review results with Division Staff and provide assistance to
correct deficient conditions. Recommend to District Manager
corrective actions requiring management approval.
- Maintain channels of communication, encouraging store and
division personnel to express new ideas, suggestions and
complaints, reviewing each for appropriateness and further
action.
- Monitor and assist stores to comply with local, state and
federal (OSHA) safety and health standards, including, but not
limited to: General Industry Safety Orders, Uniform Fire Code, Life
Safety Code, Employee Right-to-Know, Community Right-to-Know,
Hazardous Waste Disposal, Lockout/Tagout, Powered Industrial Truck
(PIT), Emergency Evacuation, Ergonomics and OSHA
Recordkeeping.
- Reviews Safety Tracking tools to track and measure safety
performance, identifying exceptions to good performance and working
with District Managers to resolve specific problems relating to
Safety Training, Safety Committees, Accident Investigations, Floor
Maintenance and on-site Safety Surveys.
- Monitor training of new associates with respect to safety
policies and procedures. Determine need for additional or renewed
training, considering new exposures, repeat offenses, and return to
work following an industrial injury. Conduct group training
seminars as needed to address relevant training topics.
- Oversee store accident reporting and investigation procedures
and provide instruction as required. Partner with Associate
Relations to recommend disciplinary action against store personnel
responsible for flagrant safety or recordkeeping
violations.
- Monitor store safety committee activities to ensure that
meetings are efficient and effective. Provide training as
needed.
- Participate in store director and department meetings, career
advancement training, Risk Management continuing education, claim
reviews and individual store safety committee meetings. Public
speaking to groups of various sizes is also required.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Education Level:
Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent work
experience.
Skills & Experience Level:
- 3-5 years grocery retail and prior safety experience, loss
control or claims is preferred.
- Previous training and auditing experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of Federal Occupational Safety and Health
Standards (OSHA) preferred.
- Possess excellent communications skills, both written and
oral.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- Work may be performed in a temperature-controlled
environment.
- Must sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- May spend long periods of time at desk or computer
terminal.
- May use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office
equipment in the course of normal workday.
- Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in
completion of job duties.
- Workday is fast paced, some evening and weekend work may be
required.
- Position requires weekly travel to various store locations
throughout the division. Incumbent must be able to drive a vehicle,
have their own transportation and be available for overnight
travel. Incumbent must be able to move freely about the stores
including second-story offices, back rooms and production
areas.
- Requires analytical ability and mental alertness to ensure
accurate and thorough completion of work activities and for data
interpretation and analysis. Possess ability to concentrate and
deal with frequent interruptions.
